My healthy 74-year-old mother-in-law unexpectedly passed away. She had been losing sleep due to nocturnal leg cramps and, although the cramps were mild, she asked her doctor if there was anything that could be done. He immediately prescribed her an outdated pharmaceutical drug that (unbeknownst to us) was used to treat malaria some time ago. A week later, she was experiencing the numerous side effects from this drug which quickly hospitalized her. A week later, she passed away. My family was devastated. In the days following our loss, all I could think about was how this tragic situation could have been avoided. And now it can be.
