We’ve discussed Landrace cannabis strains here in the past. Drawn from the Danish word for “origin,” the term “landrace” in reference to cannabis literally means the “original strain.” As in, the first place (or places) cannabis flower initially spouted up from the ground.
This topic gets a lot of attention these days because the vast majority of currently popular cannabis strains are hybrids.
A hybrid can be when two strains of the same species, either two Indicas or two Sativas, are bred to create a third strain. Or when two strains from divergent species, an Indica strain crossed with a Sativa strain, are bred to develop a third strain.
In either case, the resulting strain is one step further removed from its Landrace origins.
What’s The Difference Between Landrace And Hybrid Strains And Why Does It Matter?
The main difference between landrace and hybrid strains is that landrace strains come from one of the 7 or 8 “original” strains, while hybrids are a variation created by crossbreeding these 7 or 8 original strains or other hybrids.
As to why this difference matters, the contrast boils down to the traits associated with a particular strain.
The trains common to landrace strains – color, shape, flavor, and potency – are inherent to the strain. In other words, those elements are set in a landrace strain.
On the other hand, Hybrids are explicitly bred in pursuit of emphasizing a trait or set of traits.
For example, a hybrid may be bred to achieve… A higher or lower THC or CBD content. A purplish hue or vibrant green glow. A citrus aroma or a pineapple flavor. Or any other of a number of notable traits.
But all of these traits are traced back to their landrace roots. A fact that makes landrace strains, which are increasingly rare these days, so important to cannabis cultivations.
It also prompts the question.
What Are The ORIGINAL Landrace Cannabis Strains?
As with cannabis in general, landrace strains fall into two species, Indicas and Sativas.
Landrace Indica Strains
Sativa strains were more widely known and used in the Western world before Indica strains. Yet, Indica landrace strains are commonly accepted as the “original cannabis strains.”
Indica strains track their roots in Central Asia, specifically in the Himalayan foothills along the border of what is now Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The three landrace strains native to this region include:
Landrace Sativa Strains
Unlike Indica strains, Sativa strains are native to several different locales spread around the globe. And they include:
Durban Poison – Found in several areas of Africa, but mainly South Africa.
Acapulco Gold – Native to Mexico.
Lamb’s Bread – Native to Jamaica.
Panama Red – Found in areas of South America.
Thai (AKA Thai Stick) – Found in Southeast Asia.
Looking To Try Landrace Strains?
There’s no definitive advantage to either landrace or hybrid strains. It’s really a matter of the desired effects. And you can achieve most effects with both landrace and hybrid strains.
But if you’re interested in experimenting with landrace strains, why not have them delivered?
