How to Sober Up When You’re “Too High” On Cannabis

How high is “too high?” For cannabis users, the answer to this question depends largely on your experience and tolerance level.

For a hardcore “stoner” with decades spent blazing kind buds all the live long day – There’s no such thing as “too high.”

But a puff or two of potent Kush could be enough to render first-timers and less than seasoned users catatonic.

And if you fall into the latter group, when that “too high” apex hits, it can be terrifying. Some folks even descend into a full-blown panic attack and wind up in the emergency room. An experience that fuels the myth of the “cannabis overdose.”

This all-too-common mishap prompts a couple of questions we get all the time here at Cannawayz.com…

First, how long does it take to sober up from cannabis?

And secondly, how can you sober up faster, especially if you’re “too high?”

Two reasonable questions if your latest weed session has you on the verge of a panic attack!

So, let’s tackle these two inquiries in order.

How Long Does it Take to Sober Up From Cannabis?

Several factors determine the average length of your high, including…

  • Dosage
  • Method of consumption
  • Strength of the Cannabis and product type
  • Body weight
  • Whether you imbibed on an empty stomach
  • And tolerance level

So, while the average cannabis high lasts between 30 minutes to 3 hours, any of the above factors can extend this time frame.

The good news is the peak of that high usually hits at the halfway point, let’s say around the 90-minute mark. So, by hour 3, you’ll have passed the “Oh my God, I’m TOO HIGH” stage.

A Couple of Things to Watch Out For

Of course, the bigger the dose, the stronger the effects. But when smoking flower or vaping concentrate, this is less of an issue. Typically speaking, you can only get so high smoking or vaping.

But that said, if you’re imbibing some VERY STRONG kind bud for the first time, it can catch you off guard. And bounce you into the “I’m way too high” zone.

Additionally, edibles can not only sneak up on you, as they generally take time to kick in, but they can also deliver a MUCH stronger high than you expect.

And this is particularly true if you unwittingly take a larger than recommended dose. Edible dosage instructions can sometimes be challenging, as they aren’t always crystal clear. And what seems a reasonable amount is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much!

Also, the dosage in homemade edibles (baked by novice cooks) can be off. And if the chef over does it with the weed, you’re in for a SUPER INTENSE high.

How to Sober Up When You’re Too

As with alcohol and other substances, the only true path to sobriety is time. But that said, here are a few strategies to help better pass the time…

Don’t PANIC

Of course, this is much easier said than done. One of the most common signs that you’re “too high” is a blooming sense of panic.

But just as you can psyche yourself up to ski down a black diamond run, hop on a towering rollercoaster, or bungee jump off a sky-high platform, you can also talk yourself down from a panic attack.

Just keep reminding yourself you’re fine. Repeat it like a mantra… I’m fine. Everything is OK. And there’s nothing to worry about.

Try Some Physical Activity

Get outside and take a walk. Cruise around the block a couple of times and shake out your limbs, working off the nervous energy. Shoot some baskets if you have access to a hoop or play catch if you’re with a buddy.

The point is to put your focus on something other than your panic.

Drink Some Water Have a Snack

Having a glass or two of water (or fruit juice or whatever your preferred beverage) will help keep you hydrated and relieve your “cotton mouth.” Plus, the simple act of doing something “normal,” like having a glass of water, can be grounding.

Having a snack can be relaxing, especially with foods you enjoy. It also activates your digestive functions, which can help reconnect you to your physical body.

Have Some Lemon

Believe it or not, lemons have been recognized as a cannabis high antidote for centuries. Lemon contains the terpene limonene, a soothing scent that can help counter anxiety and depression. And this, in turn, helps calm your mental state.

Squeeze some lemon juice or scrape a little lemon zest into hot water to make a relaxing beverage.

Hop in The Shower or Take a Bath

Showers and baths naturally relax the body. They tend to lower your heart rate, relieve muscle tension, and generally set you at ease.

Some Closing Advice: Know Your Limits Before You Imbibe

The best way to deal with being “too high” is to avoid the situation altogether. And that requires a little critical thinking…

If you know you’re a little weight, don’t overdo it.

If you’re trying a new strain or edible or unfamiliar cannabis product, take it easy at first.

Don’t bow to peer pressure. Will the folks pressuring you to “toke up” be there to scrape you off the floor when you’re totally freakin’ out!? Probably not.

And a word to the wise when it comes to edibles. As noted above, they take time to kick in. Sometimes over an hour. So, if you pop a gummie but don’t feel anything even an hour later, resist the temptation to down another one. Because when the eventually high hits, it’s going to HIT HARD!

Medical marijuana delivery services and recreational marijuana delivery services are a quick and convenient way to buy cannabis without ever setting foot in a dispensary. Just place an online order, and your favorite cannabis strains will soon arrive at your front door.
