A “Space Goddess” Gave an African Tribe Cannabis

A West African tribe, the Dogon, claim in lore passed down through generations that cannabis was brought to Earth by a goddess descending from the brightest stars in the sky, Sirius A and B, which they called “two-dog star.”

The fact that Sirius B is invisible to the naked eye has prompted many to suggest the Dogon’s claim must be legitimate. Not that an actual goddess showed up. But instead, that tribe's people mistook an alien with a bale full of weed for a goddess.

“Star People” Gifted Cannabis to the Cherokee Indians

Hyapatia Lee is a 1-quarter Cherokee Indian and former ‘80s porn star turned New Age self-help advocate and author. And Ms. Lee has made similar claims about the alien-cannabis connection in her reporting for the famed cannabis publication, High Times Magazine.

According to Lee, “Star People” brought “gatunlati” (which happens to be the Cherokee word for both cannabis and alien) to the Cherokees.

Lee also notes that tales of medicinal plants, including cannabis, being brought to the Earth by “Star People” are common in the oral history of many Native American tribes.

Aliens, Gods + Cannabis

You’ll probably notice the reoccurring theme of a connection between aliens and gods if you're paying attention here. To ancient, and what some might call “unsophisticated” cultures, aliens could easily be conflated with gods.

Think of it this way… You live in a society where a cart with wheels or a bow and arrow constitutes cutting-edge technology. Meanwhile, a being, or beings, suddenly appear from the heavens. Such an event probably seems like God descending to the Earth.

Then consider the “mind-expanding” effects that accompany cannabis use. In light of such altered perceptions, it’s easy to see why primitive peoples would make a connection between gods (or aliens) and weed.

As in… “Smoking, eating, or drinking tea made with this pungent selling plant makes me feel weird and must be a gift from the gods as means to connect with these otherworldly beings.”

Ultimately, the question of whether such claims are true really comes down to beliefs. As with most conspiracy theories, their validity in your eye’s stems from your beliefs.
