*Some pipes come with built-in screens. And some cannabis users, for whatever reason, prefer not to use screens. All of this said, if your bowl doesn’t include a built-in screen and you don’t want to suck super-heated chunks of ash down your throat, a screen is probably a good idea, too.

• Grind, cut, or tear up your gram or two of preferred cannabis (toss out any unwanted stems or seeds, of which there should be very little if you’re buying from a reputable source).
• Sprinkle the broken up weed into the bowl until it reaches the rim.
• Tamp it down gently enough to flush out the air but not totally compress the flowers.
• Sprinkle in a bit more weed, again until it reaches the rim.
• Tamp down the additional weed gently, again flushing out the excess air but not packing the bud in too tightly.

And now, you’re ready to smoke! Just put your finger over the carb, light the weed with your lighter, suck in until you fill the pipe barrel with smoke, and inhale a hit.
